Make no mistake, “Rango” will 100% rope in an Oscar Nomination for Best Animated Feature in 2012. It’s a lock. “Rango” tells the story of desert varmints in need one thing for a better life…..water. The animation is simply staggering against the backdrop of numerous classic Westerns. The voice cast includes Johnny Depp, Ned Beatty, Bill Nighy, Alfred Molina, Abagail Breslin & Isla Fisher whose character’s name is Beans. The Aussie actress says her secret to getting the voice just right was combining a bit of Clint Eastwood with a twang of Holly Hunter. She did a fantastic job. As did Johnny Depp. Rango’s Ramblings are classic.
The movie drops a number of sophisticated jokes that will catapult straight over kids’ heads. I like that. It reminded me of old Saturday morning Looney Tunes cartoons. There’s tons of adult humor woven into the material while the kids are still entertained. This is such a clever effort. You can see so many intricate layers within the animated frames, be it tumbleweeds, iconic gunfights, windblown sand, complex lighting, shading & overall attention to detail.
Go see it for yourself. This movie is a terrific bang for your movie dollar. Special shout out to director Gore Verbinski for fighting & insisting that “Rango” be released in regular 2D. After seeing “Drive Angry” 3D, I’m just so burnt out on 3D. It’s just too expensive & they are released to the public every weekend with or without reason. Hollywood is always about the cash so thumbs up to Verbinski for standing his 2D ground.

Leave it to Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow to provide the creative spark in the creation of his animated character, “Rango.” I caught up with Johnny at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. Depp tells the story, “I’ve always had an affinity for lizards. I always felt somewhat close to them. I feel somewhat reptilian sometimes. When (Director) Gore Verbinski and I were doing Pirates 1, 2 and 3, there were times where Jack Sparrow had to run. There was a very specific run I wanted. (The run was inspired) from seeing footage of a lizard running across the water & it was the strangest thing I’ve ever seen! I said Gore, (Jack’s) gotta be a lizard running. That was the whole thing. …. I actually think that Rango was somehow planted in Gore’s brain from (doing) that lizard run. So when Gore called me & said I want you to play a lizard, I thought well I’m 1/2 way there! I know what I’m doing.” What do Johnny’s kids think of their pop playing Rango? Johnny joked, “I force my kids to call me The Lizard King.”

“I Am Number Four” is like an episode of “Dawson’s Creek” intermixed with Aliens. This is a summer popcorn movie. The problem is: It’s only February! It’s the story of a reclusive alien seeking refuge on planet Earth. He & eight other good guy aliens are being hunted in numerical order. The Bad Guy aliens absolutely, 100% remind me of the aliens in the worst movie of all time, “Battlefield Earth” which starred John Travolta.
You’d think Hollywood would’ve learned a valuable lesson here. The lesson being, let’s never in any way duplicate the laughable aliens in “Batttlefield Earth.” Just to make sure it doesn’t happen a 3rd time, I’m offering Hollywood this tidbit of advice. If you’re trying to make aliens look intimidating, make them bigger. By bigger I mean, don’t dress them up in Herman Munster High Heeled Boots!! As Van Wilder would say, “Write that down.”
Timothy Olyphant plays the aliens guardian. The guy straight up took this one for the paycheck. The acting in this picture is so flat. I think teenagers will dig this film. But tried & true Sci-Fi fans will find, “I Am Number Four” screams, ” I Am Number Two Stars.”

Tom Cruise’s version of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” has zero to do with honorable gay men & women serving in the United States Armed Forces. He’s had his own version for over 20 years. It’s an understanding with motion picture studios in regards to doing his own stunt work. Hollywood is so overprotective of their superstars with good reason. Things go wrong. People who do stunts die. It’s rare, but it does happen. When stars get too close to the action, anything goes. While Fighting as James Bond, Pierce Brosnan’s million dollar face had to get stitches when a stunt man caught him with a miscalculated punch. Production was shut down for days. That’s just one example. In Tom Cruise’s case, that’s him on the outside of the train in the first “Mission: Impossible” flopping around with a jet engine blasting air in his face. Tom Recalls, “That’s wasn’t acting! We were just hanging on!”
I love when an actor shows pain to get the role right. A few examples: Natalie Portman transforming into a ballerina. Daniel Day Lewis working with miner’s tools months before filming to play an oil man in “There Will be Blood.” Christian Bale changing his appearance in “Rescue Dawn,” “The Machinist” & most recently, “The Fighter.” On the other side of the coin, when guys like Owen Wilson play a surfer in a movie, he trots out of the ocean with a surfboard safely ticked under his arm. No pain, or dedication & the audience loses out. If Tom Cruise was to play a surfer, you can bet he’s been out there in the ice-cold water for at least six months working it through with top rated surfers. Even if it’s only for 30 seconds of footage, you know it’s Cruise in the surf ‘going for it’ & mastering it.
“Going for it” describes “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.” (OK, I’m not crazy about that title) Tom’s character Ethan Hunt finds himself high atop, the Burj Khalifa Dubai Skyscraper. It’s quite simply the tallest building on the planet standing at 2,717 feet. That’s a 1/2 mile straight up folks!
Yes there are safety straps in place, but when you’re that high up, nothing is safe. I have friends on the inside telling me, the filming was doubly dangerous because of the IMAX factor. IMAX cameras are clunky & awkward to maneuver. The images are said to be incredulous. Another dangerous factor, the high speed Dubai winds at that altitude carry stinging sand particles. Not to mention hovering helicopters subjected to gusts of high winds.
No matter what you think of Tom Cruise, you gotta be impressed by his willingness to push himself. Some people say too much. These “Mission: Impossible” movies are arguably built ar0und action sequences & not where the focus should be, around a good story. Let’s hope the writers push themselves to create a story that matches the action. That’s the movie I’d like to see, in IMAX.
“Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” opens in theaters December 16th, 2011.

After the success of “Taken,” Liam Neeson re-enters suspense thriller territory with “Unknown.” He stars as Dr. Martin Harris, a successful man married to his smokin’ hot wife, Elizabeth played by January Jones.(“Mad Men,” “X Men First Class.”) As you’ve probably seen in the trailer, Martin Harris finds himself in a unique position: No one around believes he is in fact Martin Harris. Except for maybe his cab driver, Gina played by Diane Kruger (“Inglourious Basterds.”) No matter what stuffy film critics say, “Unknown” has a very clever plot twist. Is it Oscar caliber? No, not even close. There are fights, car chases, shootouts & the usual suspects. It’s not to be over thought. “Unknown” is fun at the movies.

July 2012 should be well worth the wait.
“She’s very forward…and backward kinda girl.” This one looks like fun. Check out this suggestive scene with Carla & co-star Timothy Olyphant.
