“Megamind” Director Tom McGrath interview with Leo Quinones

Tom McGrath & an army of hundreds pooled their creativity to create, “Megamind.”  The film has an amazing look, with many layers.  It also shoots holes through the cliches in superhero movies, monster movies & loves stories.  What I like most is Will Ferrell.  I love when he just goes off the page & makes up with the most ‘off the wall’ verbage.   I bet that’s how in “Ron Burgundy: Anchorman,” he came up with the phrase, “A Whale’s Vagina.” To this day, I try to sneak that very phrase into everyday conversation.  Tom had lots to share about directing “Megamind.” I hope you enjoy the interview.   All my interviews are FREE  for download now on itunes.

November 1st, 2010

Dear Friends,

On Monday November 22nd, I will join hundreds to help raise over 100,000 pounds of food for the LA Regional Foodbank by holding an all day event at the Smart & Final located at 11251 W. Pico Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90064 (next to the 405). By giving, you are supporting our effort of the past 13 years, which has risen over a half million pounds of food for LA’s less fortunate. Thanks to your support, these families might otherwise go hungry Thanksgiving night.

I have a personal stake in this fundraiser. This event has grown to become one of the biggest, most efficient Food Drives of the year for the LA Foodbank.  This is where you can provide direct relief.

My goal is to raise at least 100,000 pounds of food. You can help me reach that goal. Your monetary donation is tax deductible. Please make your check payable to the LA Regional Foodbank. The deadline to collect pledges is Monday, November 22nd.

If you miss the deadline and would like to donate, we can work it out! Please call me if you have any other questions about The Film Freak Thanksgiving Food Drive. I can be reached via email at leo@filmfreak.com. Thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,

Leo Quinones

“The Boondock Saints” Interview with Leo Quinones

“Boondock Saints” fans, this one’s for you.  Sean Patrick Flanery & Norman Reedus are a couple of cool dudes.  This is a typical press junket interview. They have to sit down & get interviewed by about 50 or so douchebags, myself included. This also means, I barely have 3 minutes to meet, greet & interview.  Most outlets use 20-30 seconds of footage.  On my show, you everything: The good, the bad & sometimes, the awkward! Not in this case however.     Could be the favorite ending to any interview I’ve ever done.  You’ll see how accommodating these gents were.  Enjoy.

“Saw” Creators James Wan & Leigh Whannell

“Saw” fans!  Rally around this! Here is a FREE 5-part interview with “Saw” creators JAMES WAN & LEIGH WHANNELL. I stand behind this interview!!  If you find a better, more insightful or energetic interview, anywhere, let me know. These guys are amazing.  They go all the way back and relive the creation of the first “Saw.”

SAW 3D star Cary Elwes & Leo Quinones on the Blood Red Carpet

Cary Elwes is one of my favorite actors. Go back & check out “Glory” with Morgan Freeman, Matthew Broderick & Denzel Washington.  You can’t get the in any history book.  Cary gave a terrific supporting role in “Liar Liar.”  His version of ‘the Claw” simply paled in comparison to Jim Carrey, as to its intent.  Then there’s “The Princess Bride.” There are two kinds of people in the world.  The ones who love “The Princess Bride,” & the ones who’ve yet to see “The Princess Bride.” It’s in my Top 5 All Time Favorite Movies.  I believe R.O.U.S’ do exist!  Enjoy the interview.

“Tron: Legacy” Exclusive Preview

“Tron: Legacy” is no doubt the Sci-Fi Must See of the holiday season.   My thing is, there are millions upon millions of moviegoers who’ve never seen the first “Tron.”  I barely remember seeing it on VHS.  Make no mistake, there’s a rabid cult following for the original “Tron.”  No spoilers here. NewTron begs you to do one thing: Your Homework.  That is to say, do yourself a favor & make sure you see the original before seeing the sequel.  Yes, of course, nowadays filmmakers will make the sequel a ‘stand alone’ adventure, but the tone & themes are all right there for you to absorb & enhance your experience.  I’ve seen the 23 minutes preview of “Tron: Legacy.” Joe Kosinski, making his feature film debut, gets it.  “Tron” was so far ahead of it’s time, anyone taking a shot at the sequel must ensure visual pyrotechnics. Show me something.  Give me that feeling of ‘WOW!’ The sleekness of the future looks daunting as if to say, if you’re not up to speed, you’re gonna get left by the wayside.   The images, sound design all look fine.  The most important thing here is story.   The first story of Kevin Flynn(Jeff Bridges) is woven perfectly into the fabric of the sequel with son Sam Flynn(Garrett Hedlund).  I’m looking forward to “Tron: Legacy,” after my homework, re-watching the first “Tron.”

“The Company Men” Not Very Good Company!

Tough to watch millionaires actors like Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Chris Cooper & Tommy Lee Jones play guys who lost their jobs at shipping company due to corporate bloodbath downsizing in 2008. For far too long, the film pulls you underwater & keeps you there as the cast wallows in self pity & denial.  You’ll actually look at your watch, then look at the screen & want to yell ‘Dudes!  Snap out of it!’  I was already privy to a depressing movie about corporate firings: “Up In The Air.” At least when Clooney fired you, he looked dashing doing it.

Robin Hood Reboot: Much too heavy for Sherwood folks.

IF YOU’RE WONDERING ABOUT SHELLING OUT BUCKS TO SEE ‘ROBIN HOOD,’GIVE ME A MINUTE & I’LL TELL YOU IF THIS ONE HITS THE MARK. RUSSELL CROWE TAKES HIS SHOT AT ROBIN HOOD, A ROLE HE’S WANTED SINCE CHILDHOOD. BASICALLY WHAT YOU’VE GOT IS AN ORIGIN STORY. THE TITLE SHOULD HAVE BEEN, “ROBIN HOOD BEGINS.” THE USUAL SUSPECTS ARE ALL REPRESENTED, SHERIFF OF NOTTINGHAM, FRIAR TUCK, LITTLE JOHN & EACH WERE PRIVVY TO MICROSCOPIC BITS OF CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.

MARION WAS PLAYED BY CATE BLANCHETT. WHAT’S PLAINLY OBVIOUS HERE IS, THERE’S ABSOLUTELY ZERO CHEMISTRY BETWEEN CROWE & BLANCHETT. TOO BAD FOR US, BECAUSE, IT’S THEIR LOVE THAT DRIVES MUCH OF THE STORY. I ALSO FOUND THE PLOT CONFUSING. DIRECTOR RIDLEY SCOTT STARTED OUT USING A REFRESHING LIGHT TONE DURING THE OPENING BATTLE SEQUENCE. I LOVED IT. BUT SOON THERE AFTER THE FILM’S TONE REMAINED VERY DARK & OPPRESSIVE. I WAS BUMMED OUT.

WHEN YOU COMMIT TO A 12TH CENTURY PERIOD PIECE, YOU’RE READY FOR THE EXCITEMENT, YOU’RE READY FOR WONDERMENT, YOU’RE READY FOR SOMETHING, ANYTHING TO HAPPEN. THIS IS WHERE ROBIN HOOD GOES WIDE OF THE MARK. PLUS, ARGUABLY, THE FINEST ACTOR IN THE CAST, JOHN HURT IS LOST & REDUCED TO A DEAD END SUPPORTING ROLE.

IF ‘BRAVEHEART’ SETS THE BAR FOR THIS GENRE, THEN ROBIN HOOD IS ‘BRAVEHEART LITE.’ IF YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST SEE IT THEATERS, MIGHT I SUGGEST HITTING A MATINEE. THAT’LL SAVE YOU BUCKS AT THE BOX OFFICE.
