The Lone Ranger Movie Review

I had so wanted for this particular movie to transport me back to the Old West. Didn’t happen. How can The Lone Ranger possibly utter the phrase,”Let’s do this”?  In the past 2 years, just about every woman heading into the gym has used that exact same phrase, “Let’s do this” as their pre-workout status update.  What’s next? Tonto finds his way using Google Maps?

Two things I thoroughly enjoyed. One, Director Gore Verbinksi’s exotic shooting locales.   There are some beautiful shots in this movie. Two. The bad guy. Butch Cavendish (William Fichtner). The make-up application was 2 1/2 hours every day of shooting.

My personal take: I know when CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) takes over the screen. These days, most audiences know too.  So why on earth would you saturate it with so much CGI into a movie set in 1869? To make it more exciting? What’s more exciting than just plain Cowboys & Indians?  What’s more exciting than the thunderous roar of running horses?  What’s more exciting than a good old-fashioned Western? It just doesn’t work.  Tonally, this movie was all over the map.  Serious Western? Revenge Film? Buddy Comedy?  The Lone Ranger will work for boys between the ages of 9 and 14. But even then, the film goes on forever at 2 hours 29 minutes.

The Lone Ranger is a runaway train from the beginning. Too bad it’s headed in the wrong direction.  I’m sorry for the bummer news.  I love movies.  Follow me on Twitter @leoquinones.  You can also hear me every Saturday at 4p PST hosting America’s Longest Running Movie Talk Show, The Film Freak Movie Talk Show on KFWB NewsTalk 980 AM Los Angeles. Brave Movie Review

Disney Pixar jumps into the summer box office fray with “Brave.”  It’s the story of Princess Merida, a spirited lass from the Highlands of Scotland.  Animators first journeyed to Scotland way back in 2006.  They then returned in 2007 to immerse within Scottish culture.  Their research included taking in stories steeped in the Scots culinary habits, foggy weather, wildlife, trees & rich ancestry.  These steps are what make the animation is as good as what you’d expect from Pixar.

Merida’s journey revolves around a universal theme of most teenagers throughout the ages, ‘Let me live my own life!’  The conflict comes from within the family must be resolved with family.  The story involves witches, potions, ferries & thundering horseback rides.  Young girls all over the world will absolutely love watching ‘Brave.’  The movie is being pushed as 3D, but you can save a few bucks per tickets by watching it in 2D.  It’s just as fun.

I think Brave is a wee bit scary for kids under the age 6.  There’s classic Disney villains & there’s things nightmares are made of.  Hit a bullseye like Merida & Follow Leo on Twitter @leoquinones.  The Film Freak iPhone App is %100 FREE. Just search Film Freak.

REVIEW: Marvel’s The Avengers *NO SPOILERS*

Published by in Movie Review on May 4th, 2012 | Comments Off

Marvel’s The Avengers defies all logic.  Writer/Director JOSS WHEDON gets the credit with bringing his cinematic vision to life.  On top of that, six generations of Marvel Comic Book writers get their day in the sun, as they should.  Here’s the assignment.  Take Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Nick Fury, Black Widow & Hawkeye and put them all together in one film that makes actual sense.  In a covert world, this is called, “The Avengers Initiative.”  I’d say the mission was a complete & utter success.

The reason is layered.  Let’s tear right into it.  Good Storytelling. Formidable Foes.  Good Acting.  Eye-Popping Special Effects.  Just enough back story on each character.  Genuine Excitement. Smart Humor.  Perfect Tone.  If there’s anything wrong with The Avengers, let someone else bring it to the table.  I was just jacked up on adrenaline.  What’s happened here is a movie miracle.

There’s so much riding on a movie like this.  Not for the studio, but for the fans.  When a comic book movie comes out & falls short of hitting the mark, who always gets burned, the fans.   The Avengers gives Fanboys & Fangirls the right to pump their fists & revel in the fact that their beloved Marvel characters were well taken care of by Mr. Whedon.

Go see The Avengers in theaters. If you’re lucky enough to afford paying full freight, go see it in IMAX 3D. You will not be disappointed.  I can’t imagine anyone not liking this film.  This is what movie-going is all about.
