The Lone Ranger Movie Review

I had so wanted for this particular movie to transport me back to the Old West. Didn’t happen. How can The Lone Ranger possibly utter the phrase,”Let’s do this”?  In the past 2 years, just about every woman heading into the gym has used that exact same phrase, “Let’s do this” as their pre-workout status update.  What’s next? Tonto finds his way using Google Maps?

Two things I thoroughly enjoyed. One, Director Gore Verbinksi’s exotic shooting locales.   There are some beautiful shots in this movie. Two. The bad guy. Butch Cavendish (William Fichtner). The make-up application was 2 1/2 hours every day of shooting.

My personal take: I know when CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) takes over the screen. These days, most audiences know too.  So why on earth would you saturate it with so much CGI into a movie set in 1869? To make it more exciting? What’s more exciting than just plain Cowboys & Indians?  What’s more exciting than the thunderous roar of running horses?  What’s more exciting than a good old-fashioned Western? It just doesn’t work.  Tonally, this movie was all over the map.  Serious Western? Revenge Film? Buddy Comedy?  The Lone Ranger will work for boys between the ages of 9 and 14. But even then, the film goes on forever at 2 hours 29 minutes.

The Lone Ranger is a runaway train from the beginning. Too bad it’s headed in the wrong direction.  I’m sorry for the bummer news.  I love movies.  Follow me on Twitter @leoquinones.  You can also hear me every Saturday at 4p PST hosting America’s Longest Running Movie Talk Show, The Film Freak Movie Talk Show on KFWB NewsTalk 980 AM Los Angeles. VIDEO: First Look Dark Shadows Trailer

Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows goes for the laughs.  It’s a fish-out-of-water story, with a vampire.  Unlike Team Edward, Barnabas Collins is a vampire who doesn’t cast a reflection in the mirror.  This looks fun & silly to me.   I can’t wait.

First Pic! Johnny Depp as Tonto, Armie Hammer as The Lone Ranger

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is changing history.  It looks like Tonto is getting top billing!  He tweeted today, “Tonto and The Lone Ranger Ride Again!”  Gore Verbinksi directs.  I will admit, Depp’s look in this pic only is far from what I imagined.  I thought Depp was going to play it much more natural.  Interesting choice with the headpiece too.  Not just Native American feathers, but an entire bird!  It’s also good to see Armie Hammer is loose clothes.  No one wants to see a P90X cowboy.

I’m very excited to see The Lone Ranger May 21, 2013!

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Movie Review

The thing about the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movies is this:  They’re Pirate/Zombie movies folks.  Why do people forget such a simple fact?  Rob Marshall takes over the directing chores for Gore Verbinski (who helmed the first three Pirate films.) Pirates,  Zombies & Mermaids with attitude, lots of attitude.  Before I forget, stay seated through the ending credits. There is a scene at the very end of the film.

It’s the 4th go round with good ol’ Captain Jack.  Johnny Depp was itchin’ to jump back in those old boots & set sail.  This time, it’s a quest for Ponce De Leon’s Fountain of Youth.  Along for the race is peg-legged Captain Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) I love how the Pirates ride gets woven into the movie’s scenery. You’ll know it when you see it.

Also, the cast was shaken up with the addition of Ian McShane as Blackbeard & Penelope Cruz as Angelica, a woman who knows Jack, & knows him all too well.  There’s also two superstar cameos.  One you already know, Keith Richards of the Stones returns as Jack’s father, Captain Teague.  The other cameo is all on you.

Captain Jack does lots of high altitude escaping. He swings, dangles, catapults & flies over just about anything & everything.  Hey, he’s a swashbuckling pirate with an uncanny sense of balance.  I don’t want to get into full details of the story.  I hate reading reviews that are nothing but long essays entitled SPOILER.  I’ve said enough.

If you liked Pirates 1,2 & 3, you’ll like 4.  If you didn’t like Pirates 1, 2 & 3, you’ll never learn, cuz you won’t like 4.  The first one is still the very best.  To get into a fantasy adventure movie such as this, you must be willing to do three things. (1) Suspend your disbelief  (2) just go with the flow & (3) take off your cynical hat. Remember, at the end of the day it’s still, just a Pirate/Zombie movie.  It’s not Oscar season people, it’s the summer.  Go on a seafaring voyage with Captain Jack. It’s the Pirates life for me & you too!

Film Freak Movie Review Rango Rambles On In Hilarious Romp.

Make no mistake, “Rango” will 100% rope in an Oscar Nomination for Best Animated Feature in 2012.  It’s a lock.  “Rango” tells the story of desert varmints in need one thing for a better life…..water.  The animation is simply staggering against the backdrop of numerous classic Westerns.  The voice cast includes Johnny Depp, Ned Beatty, Bill Nighy, Alfred Molina, Abagail Breslin & Isla Fisher whose character’s name is Beans.  The Aussie actress says her secret to getting the voice just right was combining a bit of Clint Eastwood with a twang of Holly Hunter.  She did a fantastic job.  As did Johnny Depp.  Rango’s Ramblings are classic.

The movie drops a number of sophisticated jokes that will catapult straight over kids’ heads.  I like that.  It reminded me of  old Saturday morning Looney Tunes cartoons. There’s tons of adult humor woven into the material while the kids are still entertained.  This is such a clever effort.  You can see so many intricate layers within the animated frames, be it tumbleweeds, iconic gunfights, windblown sand, complex lighting, shading & overall attention to detail.

Go see it for yourself.   This movie is a terrific bang for your movie dollar.  Special shout out to director Gore Verbinski for fighting & insisting that “Rango” be released in regular 2D.   After seeing “Drive Angry” 3D, I’m just so burnt out on 3D.  It’s just too expensive & they are released to the public every weekend with or without reason.  Hollywood is always about the cash so thumbs up to Verbinski for standing his 2D ground.

Johnny Depp says Jack Sparrow was the Creative Spark of “Rango”

Leave it to Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow to provide the creative spark in the creation of his animated character, “Rango.”  I caught up with Johnny at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.  Depp tells the story, “I’ve always had an affinity for lizards.  I always felt somewhat close to them.  I feel somewhat reptilian sometimes.  When (Director) Gore Verbinski and I were doing Pirates 1, 2 and 3, there were times where Jack Sparrow had to run. There was a very  specific run I wanted. (The run was inspired) from seeing footage of a lizard running across the water & it was the strangest thing I’ve ever seen!  I said Gore, (Jack’s) gotta be a lizard running. That was the whole thing. …. I actually think that Rango was somehow planted in Gore’s brain from (doing) that lizard run.  So when Gore called me & said I want you to play a lizard, I thought well I’m 1/2 way there! I know what I’m doing.”  What do Johnny’s kids think of their pop playing Rango?  Johnny joked, “I force my kids to call me The Lizard King.”

“Rango” hits theaters March 4th, 2011
