Movie Review: Battleship **NO SPOILERS**

Battleship is getting torpedoed by movie critics. It’s what they do.  The movie is far from perfect, and is a lot better than I thought.  I’m fully aware the dialogue in the movie had challenges.  But here’s one of my pet peeves: Rudeness in movie theaters.  When a lousy line is uttered, I just kinda roll my eyes & think to myself, “That was so cheesy.”  But again, this is me, thinking to myself.

I can’t stand when someone, who gets to see these movies for FREE has the tenacity to outwardly laugh at bad dialogue. It’s the most selfish thing you can do in a movie.  It serves 2 purposes: (1) You’re attempting to show everyone how smart you are & you know a bad line when you hear it. (2) It pulls anyone out of the film who’s enjoying it.

Regular movie going folks with enjoy Battleship. Based on the 1931 Hasbro game,  it has less to do with real strategic war at sea & more to do with aliens taking over Earth.  I will say the sound design was perfect.  On the other hand, it feels like whole scenes were lifted from other movies like, “Officer & A Gentlemen,” “Independence Day,” and of course, “Transformers.”

Battleship is a long journey from perfection, but I still had fun.  My favorite thing about the movie were the ‘Old Salts,’ World War II vets who actually served on the battleship USS Missouri was very cool.  Rated PG-13.  You can follow me on Twitter @leoquinones

The Grey Movie Review

Man vs. Wolves.  When a plane crashes in the frozen Alaskan wilderness, survivors are left to fend for themselves.   The bitter, icy cold is more than enough for any group to succumb to hypothermia.   If this baron scenario wasn’t bad enough, these men had just become a meaty part of the winter food chain.

Dead passengers ripped apart in the plane crash, were devoured by savage wolves.  It’s just a matter of time before they move in to start hunting living survivors.   So sets in motion the core of  The Grey. It’s desperate men in a desperate situation.  The wolf attacks are vicious & non-stop.  It’s fun trying to guess and see if Liam becomes Purina Wolf  Chow.

The Grey is fun popcorn all the way.

The Hangover 2 Movie Review

Sometimes when you drink too much, you see double.   Seeing The Hangover 2 sober was my problem.  I wasn’t drunk, yet I was seeing double, as in the same movie twice.  This stings to write.  I, like millions of others, really love “The Hangover.”  It was clever, raunchy, funny & unpredictable.

Even though the scenario I’m about to present isn’t based in fact, it’s just a hunch, so humor me.  The original Hangover exploded 2 years ago.  Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms & Zach Galifianakis were up & comers.  Studio heads love money.  The box office tally only offered one option: Make a sequel as fast as you can.  I highly doubt The hangover was envisioned as a trilogy. I get tired of hearing that phrase.  I truly believe, director Todd Phillips was so wrapped up in the first movie, he didn’t look to the future.  He made the friggin’ best comedy in years!  Stu, Alan & Phil are The Wolfpack.  So when the suits came knocking for another night of binging with the boys on film, again this is my opinion, they had nothing.

That’s why we now have The Hangover 2.  Greed makes Hollywood crank out sequels before they’re ripe.  Instead of giving it a year to develop a decent story, they pronounce a release date, many times before a script has even been finalized.  I would’ve gladly waited a year or two to gain simple elements like surprise, unpredictability & most of all humor.

I went to see The Hangover 2 at a midnight screening sold out with Wolfpackers!  The energy was there.  The laughs were there, kinda sorta.  I, myself had a few chuckles.  The storyline so closely mirrored the original.  I’m surprised that writer/director Todd Phillips would make this movie.  I can’t believe the actors were pumped about the sequels’ script.  Hey, for $5 million dollars each, I’d probably give Todd a huge thumbs up, a wink & a big smile saying, this is the greatest comedic script in decades.  How did you make it so fresh?  Oh yeah, when do we start filming?

The Hangover 2 will make money. But this is the exact type of film that gives sequels a bad name.  Maybe, if I get really drunk & see it again, I won’t mind seeing double.  It may even ease the pain of paying $12 bucks for a 1/2 ass effort.

Liam Neeson & January Jones “Unknown” Leo Quinones Interview TV Guide Network

Quick hit with  Liam Neeson & January Jones for “Unknown.”  TV Guide Network’s flagship entertainment magazine, Hollywood 411 is hosted by a great guy, Chris Harrison.

“Unknown” Film Freak Movie Review

After the success of “Taken,” Liam Neeson re-enters suspense thriller territory with “Unknown.”  He stars as Dr. Martin Harris, a successful man married to his smokin’ hot wife, Elizabeth played by January Jones.(“Mad Men,” “X Men First Class.”)  As you’ve probably seen in the trailer, Martin Harris finds himself in a unique position:  No one around believes he is in fact Martin Harris.   Except for maybe his cab driver, Gina played by Diane Kruger (“Inglourious Basterds.”)  No matter what stuffy film critics say, “Unknown” has a very clever plot twist.  Is it Oscar caliber?  No, not even close.  There are fights, car chases, shootouts & the usual suspects.  It’s not to be over thought.   “Unknown” is fun at the movies.
