REVIEW: Marvel’s The Avengers *NO SPOILERS*

Published by in Movie Review on May 4th, 2012 | Comments Off on REVIEW: Marvel’s The Avengers *NO SPOILERS*

Marvel’s The Avengers defies all logic.  Writer/Director JOSS WHEDON gets the credit with bringing his cinematic vision to life.  On top of that, six generations of Marvel Comic Book writers get their day in the sun, as they should.  Here’s the assignment.  Take Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Nick Fury, Black Widow & Hawkeye and put them all together in one film that makes actual sense.  In a covert world, this is called, “The Avengers Initiative.”  I’d say the mission was a complete & utter success.

The reason is layered.  Let’s tear right into it.  Good Storytelling. Formidable Foes.  Good Acting.  Eye-Popping Special Effects.  Just enough back story on each character.  Genuine Excitement. Smart Humor.  Perfect Tone.  If there’s anything wrong with The Avengers, let someone else bring it to the table.  I was just jacked up on adrenaline.  What’s happened here is a movie miracle.

There’s so much riding on a movie like this.  Not for the studio, but for the fans.  When a comic book movie comes out & falls short of hitting the mark, who always gets burned, the fans.   The Avengers gives Fanboys & Fangirls the right to pump their fists & revel in the fact that their beloved Marvel characters were well taken care of by Mr. Whedon.

Go see The Avengers in theaters. If you’re lucky enough to afford paying full freight, go see it in IMAX 3D. You will not be disappointed.  I can’t imagine anyone not liking this film.  This is what movie-going is all about.

African Cats Film Freak Movie Review

You’ve never heard a lion roar like this!  Disneynature’s African Cats lept into theaters Earth Day 2011.  Filmed entirely in the wilds of Kenya, this film dazzles the senses.  You’ll experience, close up high definition footage of  sinister crocodiles lurking in murky riverbeds, mud-faced wart hogs running for their very lives & lethal rhinos twitching their ears & always on the hunt.  Those jungle citizens provide an incredible backdrop to the star predators, the African Cats.

The documentary focuses on lions & cheetahs.  Sita, is the mother cheetah who’s raising & protecting her five cubs.  Then there’s a den of lions headed up by the King of the Beasts, Fang.  The moniker was bestowed after a brutal battle which left him with a broken, dangling tooth. There’s a rival lion, Cali with his capable & ferocious sons.

Through the seasons, we discover hunting patterns, techniques & tendencies.  Parents & guardians take caution.   Hunting scenes showcase nature’s brutality with unforgettable images which include, the chase & the takedown, dead animal carcasses having their meat stripped off, bloody cats devouring & digging in, cheetah cubs being hunted in the night by hungry hyenas.    I’d say any kids under the age of seven would be scared out of their skins.

My favorite image is a silhouette of, of all things, a vulture, sitting in a tree within the full moon illuminating the background.  Striking.  African Cats made me also realize how ‘On Point’ Disney Animators were way back when they created animation for “The Lion King” in 1994. “The Circle of Life,” the wildebeest stampede, the rivalry between prides & brothers.  There are so many parallels it’s hard to keep count.    Kudos to the film crew who must endured 2 1/2 years of filming in this harsh habitat.   Time, dedication & lots of sacrifice.  To me, that’s where you get your money’s worth.

“African Cats” is narrated by Samuel L. Jackson

Film Freak Movie Talk Show “Iron Man 2″ Movie Review

Gotta love Tony Stark!  Robert Downey Jr. was born to play this guy.  Director Jon Favreau knows tone & uses it to guide us through a fantastical world. A world where men glide across the sky in klunky metallic suits with booster rockets in their boots.  No matter how unbelievable the action, in ‘Iron Man 2,’ it ALWAYS comes back to one thing:  Good acting.  The cast is solid, with Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Samuel L. Jackson, Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johanssen & a downright dedicated Mickey Rourke as Ivan Danko.  Rourke deserves credit for taking a not-so-serious movie role, so very serious.  Going method, Rourke found himself in Russia spending many hours with hardened Russian prisoners and Russian prison guards.  He also immersed himself in the culture of criminal tattoos authentic to the region & even sported Russian prison beads that were hand-crafted from melted down cigarette lighters.  The result is a Superhero movie villain you wished had more screen time.

“Iron Man” fans will hold their heads up walking out of the multiplex.  The film delivers exactly what it should.  Smirky Stark humor, fresh dialogue & a clever back story to the connection between Howard Stark (Tony’s Dad) & the Vanko family whose names was disgraced hence the vengeance of disgruntled son, Ivan.   I really didn’t like the scene where Tony Stark hosts a party in the Iron Man suit.  Really drunk, really forced & just plain lame.  If that was the best way to get James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) upset enough to don one of Tony’s extra Iron Man suits, maybe the writers should grabbed strong coffee & donuts & extended the writing session.

At the end of the day, don’t try to overthink ‘Iron Man 2.”  People should remember it’s not Oscar Season, it’s Blockbuster Season.  Grab a popcorn doused in butter & blast off with Tony Stark. I did & it was awhile before I came down to earth.  Can’t wait to see it again.
